A. Intro to Firearms & Safety *Prerequisite for I & Y This course will cover basic types of firearms, firearms safety, how to select/purchase firearms, which firearms are used for different types of hunting, and outdoor ethics. While this course does not include an actual shooting, it is a prerequisite for anyone who wishes to register for any of the shooting courses and does not possess a valid California Hunter Safety Certificate.

B. Map & Compass *Prerequisite for R or Z Participants will learn how to navigate using map and compass, and how to read topographic and other types of maps. Besides its’ usefulness for hunting and outdoor activities, this skill has become a popular recreational activity in its own right. Participants who sign up for GPS in the Field (R or Z) have priority.

C. Beginning Fly-Fishing *Prerequisite for S or AA Participants will learn about fish habits and habitat, the basics of casting, tying knots, and how to select flies and equipment. This is a dry-land class. Equipment is provided. This is a two-part class. Participants that sign up for On-Water Fly Fishing (S or AA) have priority.

D. Beginning Basic Fishing *Prerequisite for T or BB This course will provide instruction in types of rods, reels, lines, hooks, bait, knot typing, how to rig a rod, casting techniques, and how to land a fish from fresh and saltwater environments. This is a dry land class. Equipment is provided. This is a two-part class. Participants that sign up for River/Lake Fishing (T or BB) have priority.

E. Kayaking Participants will learn the basics of this popular sport. Information will include how to enter and exit the boat, safety tips, paddle strokes, and other maneuvers. This class is conducted on the Wonder Valley Ranch lake. Beginner appropriate – no advanced techniques.

F. Car Camping to Backpacking Are you a camping illiterate? Do you "pine" away at home wishing you could explore the outdoors? Learn how to pack and prepare for a weekend or weeklong backpacking trip starting with the basics of car camping and then learn some of the "insider" tips to a successful backpacking trip from novice to expert. Learn secrets of the outdoors like "how to play with bears and not lose every time". What exactly does LNT really mean (Leave No Trace)? What type of equipment is the best for me? Where do I want to go my first time out? Participants will learn how to make camping a positive experience. This will be a hands-on session demonstrating various types of tents, sleeping bags, backpacks and other equipment. All of your questions will be answered!

G. Archery *Prerequisite for CC Our own expert archers will share their expertise in a comfortable and supportive setting – guaranteeing everyone a bull’s eye! Participants will learn about various types of archery equipment, selection, safety, etiquette, ethics, and shooting form. There will be a range set up and everyone will have an opportunity to shoot a bow. Equipment is provided.

H. Using POLES for Hiking and Walking You will learn to reduce knee stress on downhill, achieve more power on uphill, improve performance and stability on all terrain, avoid hand/wrist/elbow/shoulder strain, convert energy into an upper body/core workout, recruit more muscles while walking while facilitating fat burning and weight loss, improve posture, prevent injury, efficiently adjust pole length, pole care, equipment discussion and more. You’ll learn many tips that will enable you to expand your hiking horizons and more safely and completely enjoy your outdoor experience.

I. Beginning Shotgun Shooting *Prerequisite – Class A or a Valid California Hunter Education Certificate. Participants will learn shotgun types/gauges and how to load, shoot, and cleaning fundamentals. All participants will “break a clay”. One of the most popular courses offered. We just know you’ll love this! All equipment is provided.
J. Map & Compass *Prerequisite for R or Z This is a repeat of class B
K. Beginning Fly Fishing *Prerequisite for S or AA This is a repeat of class C.

L. Beginning Basic Fishing *Prerequisite for T or BB This is a repeat of class D.
M. Outdoor Cooking Learn how to simply prepare healthy, hearty, and masterful meals in the great outdoors. Participants will learn about outdoor cooking fires, wood types, and charcoal temperature. How to build a Dutch oven fire, successful food storage for extended trips, and a variety of traditional camp cooking methods and secrets complete this course. Participants will prepare, cook, and sample their meals.

N. Archery *Prerequisite for CC This is a repeat of class G.
O. Fly Tying Construct a fly to catch a fish. This course will show you how to understand and utilize the design, shape, and application of materials to create your very own “look alike” masterpiece to “entice Mr. Trout out of his Barcalounger”. Let Jeanne show you how to build a fly that is more than just a “work of art”.

P. Exploring Wild California Learn how to plan a safe and enjoyable excursion, choose and use field guides, binoculars, and other tools of the trade. Additionally understand habitat types in relationship to plant and animal distribution, identify plants, birds, and learn to read wildlife signs. Bring a small knapsack, sturdy footwear to explore our wild lands as never before.

Saturday, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
R. GPS in the Field *Prerequisite B or J This course will offer basic instruction in using a GPS receiver in the field. The course will compliment the Map and Compass class. Wear sturdy footwear, and dress for the weather. Bring a daypack or fanny pack and a water bottle. All equipment is provided. This is a two-part class.
S. On-Water Fly Fishing *Prerequisite C or K. Participants will travel to a nearby river or lake and practice casting techniques, fly selection, reading the water, how to land and release fish, safety, and ethics. All equipment (rods, reels, waders, boots, flies) is provided unless you want to use your own. You must have a valid California Fishing License. This is a two-part class; you must enroll in Beginning Fly Fishing C or K to be eligible for this class. No exceptions please.

T. On-Water Basic Fishing *Prerequisite D or L. Participants will meet at the lake for a quick review of fishing equipment, fish habits and habitats, how to clean a fish, safety around water, and casting techniques. Participants will then fish the lake at Wonder Valley. You must have a valid California Fishing License. This is a two-part class. Participants must enroll in Beginning Basic Fishing (D or L) to be eligible to take this class. No exceptions please.
U. Outdoor Cooking This is a repeat of class M.
V. Personal Self Defense Join Sensei Kathryn Doi, Jodie Asher and Penny Carlo to learn about personal self defense. All three highly awarded and nationally recognized black belt instructors will take you through the steps of personal protection, from awareness to action. Beginner level instruction suitable for any physical ability.
W. Car Camping to Backpacking This is a repeat of class F.
X. Kayaking This is a repeat of class E.

CC. Bow Hunting *Prerequisite G or N. Participants will learn about basic bow hunting equipment and techniques, such as tree stand hunting, still hunting, stalking, and camouflage. Also learn about the habits and habitat of animals usually hunted by archers. There will be a range set up where you can try out a variety of archery equipment. Equipment is provided. This is a two-part class; you must enroll in Archery (G or N) to take this class. No exceptions please.
DD. Fly Tying This is a repeat of class O.
EE. Personal Self Defense This is a repeat of class V.
